Mais oui ! Many people join Alliance Française of Westchester because they've learned French a long time ago, however we also have many complete beginners who start learning French with us every year. It's never too late to start learning a new skill, even if that skill is learning a foreign language! Our pedagogy is based on providing a fully immersive learning environment adapted to adults, so don't worry if you don't know where to start and let our teachers guide you in your learning journey. Our team focuses on teaching all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Our teachers also make it fun by not only teaching you about a language, but also about the cultures of various Francophone countries, so be prepared to immerse yourself into a whole new world! Most adults learner need to rely on reading and writing in order to memorize new words and sentence structures, so our teachers will of course provide the possibility to do so, especially through homework and useful websites which you can explore at your own pace in order to get a broader understanding of French grammar rules. But during class time, the focus will be mostly on practice, pronunciation and conversation, as acquiring and refining those skills is much more difficult to do on your own. Our virtual classrooms will provide plenty of references and exercises you can use before and after lessons, and teachers will be available to answer any question you might have.If an official certification is necessary for you to reach your personal goals, you will have the opportunity to take official exams in French and our team will be there to advise you regarding when to take an exam, and which one might be a better fit for you (DELF, DALF, TEF, TCF, etc.). If on the contrary you're only interested in learning French as a hobby or to travel, our team will be more than happy to give you tailor-made recommendations based on your own hobbies! If you have never attended classes at AFW, you need to [contact us](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/about/contact-us/) before signing up for a class, so we can assess your level and find the ideal class for you. Unless you're a complete beginner, you also need to take our [placement test](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/placement-test/). For all new AFW students, including complete beginners, an informal interview will be arranged before the first day of class in order for our team to gain a better understanding of learning goals which are most important to you. ## When are lessons taking place? Lessons will start from September 10th onward, and will finish no later than June 27th. Our school year is organized following 3 terms of 10 lessons each. By signing up for this French lesson package, you will be able to learn French with us during our Winter 2021 term. Fall term : September 10th - December 18th (no class during Thanksgiving break) - Registrations for this session are now closedWinter term : January 4th - March 28th (no class during Presidents week) - Registrations for this session are now openSpring term : April 5th - June 27th (no class during Memorial Day weekend) Adults are grouped not only depending on their level, but also depending on their personal learning goals. Please note the number of students allowed in online groups will also be strictly limited in order to maintain a high quality learning experience.## Are there extra costs involved when joining this class? Yes, it is necessary to have a valid [membership](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/membership/) before the start of the school year. Books are also required for all classes, and the total cost of the books might vary from $60 to $80 per student, depending on their level. Normally, each student will need to have only one set of books per school year, although in some cases you might have to purchase a second set of books in January or in April, if you're joining a group which has already started working on a specific book earlier in 2020 and is carrying on studying with the same book. For online classes, an extra $25 per year may be charged per student to pay for software and e-books licences, but in this case the purchase of paper textbooks may not be necessary. Our team members will do their best to let you know what your options are if in some cases digital versions of textbooks might be available and cheaper than printed versions. Please note that if you want to attend classes during our Winter and Spring term, registration will have to be paid in full one month before the start of the next session. Because of the strict limit on the number of students in all our classes, we won't be able to automatically reserve a seat for you unless you do so. Summer lessons will be taking place between July 1st and August 29th, 2021.I am very impressed with the quality / caliber of the teachers I have had at AFW, especially Marie, Juliette and Hélène. They are always well prepared to lead each class, organized, detail oriented, tech savvy, well-versed in French culture and history and les nouvelles quotidiennes. They are demanding, in a polite way, but at the same time have astounding patience as Americans like me struggle with everything! In two words that say it all: They Care! I do not know how you find such outstanding “Enseignants”, but keep it up! À AFW, j’avais trouvé l’étude du français très amusante! RICHARD SIMMERMACHER Student Merci pour la classe! Rachel and Lana—Thank you all at l’Alliance for arranging this online class! It was easy to do; our class was, as always, fascinating and fun. It appears to be a good solution (hopefully temporary) while we are unable to safely meet in person.Looking forward to next classes! SHARON PICARD Student I heartily concur with everything Sharon wrote! AFW emailed a link, and all I needed to do was click on it, enter my name, and -- voilà -- I was there with my classmates.I had already decided to self-quarantine because of my age, so it was an especial pleasure to be able to attend class via the internet.I thank Rachel for having made this possible! My only glitch was that I hadn't fed the cat before I went on-line, so Ringo made several appearances "in class" as he swished across my computer. Many thanks to all! Bien sûr ! For non-Francophone children and teenagers, Alliance Française of Westchester is organising French immersion lessons throughout the school year, starting from 1h30mn per week, for a total of 30 lessons. When you register to our children or teenagers classes on this page, your registration is for a total of 10 lessons, all taking place during our Winter term. Is your child a native French speaker? In this case, you must check this page. Our pedagogy is based on providing a fully immersive learning environment adapted to children and their developmental needs, so at this stage lessons focus on teaching all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Younger children will learn mainly through songs, games and playful lessons, while teenagers will be given more opportunities to learn through videos and interactive activities organized online or offline (offline activities are only available if it is safe to conduct them in person). Although grammar and conjugation won't be the primary focus of lessons, teachers will make sure children and teenagers acquire all the necessary basics to be able to speak French accurately, and students who are 8 years old or more will be given the opportunity to take official exams in French if they wish to do so. While an emphasis will be on listening and speaking skills at first, reading and writing skills will become more important as your child progress, and intermediate and advanced level students will be expected to be able to write in French with a higher degree of accuracy. If your child has never attended classes at AFW, you need to [contact us](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/about/contact-us/) before signing up for a class, so we can assess their level. If your child is a teenager, they must take our [placement test](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/placement-test/). Older Teens? For children who are younger than 6 years old, please check this page. For teens who will turn 18 before January 4th, 2021, please check this page. ## Are there extra costs involved when joining this class? Yes, it is necessary to have a valid [membership](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/membership/) before the start of the school year. Books are also required for most classes, and the total cost of the books might vary from $50 to $70 per child, depending on their age and level, and depending on whether CD/DVDs are included with learning materials. Normally, each child will need to have only one set of books per school year, although in some rare cases your child might have to purchase a second set of books in January or in April, if they're joining a group which has already started working on a specific book earlier in 2020 and are carrying on studying with the same book. Because of the strict limit on the number of children in all our classes, we won't be able to automatically reserve a seat for your child unless you do so. For children or teenagers who want to carry on learning French all year round, a special Summer package can be purchased separately. Summer lessons will be taking place between July 1st and August 29th, 2021. ## What if my child can't join either online or in person lessons on a regular basis? For families who would rather organise private individual or group lessons in the safety of their own home, or who are looking for a more intensive learning pace, please [contact us](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/about/contact-us/). We may also be able to offer lessons at a discounted rate, for example if you're looking for French language pods or daily French lessons organized within your own home. This option might be suitable if for example you're expecting to be working from home during your child's lesson. If you child is fully home-schooled and already following a specific curriculum, our teacher will of course work with you in order to respect learning objectives which will be agreed in advance. As non-native French speakers, my husband and I send our children to the AFW so they can immerse themselves in the French language and culture. We also realize the importance of mastering a second language in today’s world. It’s amazing to see how their proficiency in the language has grown and most importantly, their genuine love and interest in French. VANESSA URUCI Student My daughter Stella really enjoyed the online class she had over the last few weeks. Aurélie was a wonderful teacher and Stella had a great time beginning to explore the French language. Thanks! Andrew A. Parent I believe the online platform works really well, and I am excited to see that online courses will be offered in the summer. In terms of the spring online semester, my daughter Anna has been extremely engaged, the lessons have been impactful, and she has truly been enjoying the interaction. Thank you for all that you do with the class! Melissa Parent READ MORE TESTIMONIALS https://www.afwestchesterny.org/testimonials/]]></product_content>

<product_content><![CDATA[## Upcoming Classes 100% Online: starting on January 4th , two 30mn lessons per week, Monday 10am and Saturday 12.30pmhttps://www.afwestchesterny.org/about/contact-us/ 100% in person, in Larchmont: starting on January 7th, 1 lesson per week (60mn), Thursday from 1.15pm to 2.15pm Not available on those days? More groups will be scheduled soon, [contact us to find out more](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/about/contact-us/) ## Learning French from a young age? C'est possible ! Have you always wanted to raise your child in a bilingual environment? In this case, learning French from a young age is the best way to make sure your child will develop language skills similar to those of a child growing up in a Francophone country. Young children have a better ability to mimic sounds they hear, so gaining exposure to another language before the age of 6 is best if you would like your child to speak French with confidence and with a natural pronunciation. For children who are 6 and older, other programs will then be available depending on their age and depending on the learning goals which are most important to you. For young children and toddlers, Alliance Française of Westchester is organising French immersion lessons throughout the school year, starting from one hour per week, for a total of 30 lessons (or 60 lessons lasting 30mn each if you choose online lessons). When you register to our Toddlers classes on this page, your registration is for a total of 10 lessons lasting 60mn, or 20 lessons lasting 30mn, all taking place during our Winter term. Our pedagogy is based on providing a fully immersive learning environment adapted to children and their developmental needs, so at this stage lessons primarily involve songs, toys, games, stories, and repetition of key words and expressions which will help your child discover the joy of speaking a new language. Teachers also focus on making sure children can learn and understand basic instructions, and learn to build positive relationships with their peers. If your family is already bilingual, your child will be matched with other children of a similar level and our teacher will focus more on an active acquisition of language, boosting your child's confidence in speaking French and providing a safe learning environment to help him or her embrace a multi-cultural identity. An informal interview will be arranged before the first day of class in order for our team to assess your child's level, as well as to gain a better understanding of goals which are most important to you. ## When are lessons taking place? Lessons will start from September 10th onward, and will finish no later than June 27th. Our school year is organized following 3 terms of 10 lessons each. However, if you're choosing online lessons, those are normally scheduled twice a week, for 30mn each instead of once a week for 60mn. Autumn term : September 10th - December 18th (no class during Thanksgiving break) - Registration for this session is now closedWinter term : January 7th - March 28th (no class during Presidents week) - Registration for this session is now openSpring term : April 5th - June 27th (no class during Memorial Day weekend) Children will be grouped by ages as well as depending on their level.## And what about older children? For children 7 years old and older, please [check this page](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/products/af-fall-2020-regular-children-and-teens-classes/).## Are there extra costs involved when joining this class? Yes, it is necessary to have a valid [membership](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/membership/) before the start of the school year. Books are also required for most classes, and the total cost of the books might vary from $50 to $60 per child, depending on their age and level. In some classes, CDs might be available, however their purchase is optional. Normally, each child will need to have only one set of books per school year, although in some rare cases your child might have to purchase a second set of books in April or in September, if they're joining a group which has already started working on a specific book earlier in 2020 and are carrying on studying with the same book. Please note that if you want your child to attend classes during our Winter and Spring term, registration will have to be paid in full one month before the start of the next session. Because of the strict limit on the number of children in all our classes, we won't be able to automatically reserve a seat for your child. For children who want to carry on learning French all year round, shorter Summer packages can also be purchased separately. Summer lessons will be taking place between July 1st and August 29th, 2021. ## Anything else I should be aware of? Due to the pandemic, we cannot fully guarantee that all lessons will be conducted on-site as the NY government may order a new shutdown. However, we will work with families on a case by case basis in order to propose the best tailor-made solutions depending on your child's learning needs. Please note that by signing up for this Winter term French package, you are also accepting our general terms and conditions. During the pandemic, masks are required at all times, and you must strictly follow NY state guidelines. Hand washing is also required before and after each lesson, so please insure you arrive early, or your child may miss the start of their lesson. There will be no exception possible, and parents are expected to insure their child is following social distancing rules at all time. If your child is too young to understand these rules, you will of course be able to stay with them during the lesson to make sure they comply with safety rules. ## What if my child can't join in-person group classes on a regular basis? For families who would rather organise private individual or group lessons in the safety of their own home, or who are looking for a more intensive learning pace, please [contact us](https://www.afwestchesterny.org/about/contact-us/). We may also be able to offer lessons at a discounted rate, for example if you're looking for daily French lessons or French language pods organized within your own home. Although in this case, please note our teachers are there to teach French only, they cannot be responsible for any other duties and an adult should be present in your home at all time. This option might be suitable if for example you're expecting to be working from home during your child's lesson, in which case our team will work with you to establish clear guidelines so a regular routine can be implemented. If you child is home-schooled and already following a specific curriculum, our teacher will of course work with you in order to respect learning objectives which will be agreed in advance. Please note that for lessons organized at home, you must be able to guarantee a safe social-distance protocol, in order to keep both your family and our teachers safe. As non-native French speakers, my husband and I send our children to the AFW, so they can immerse themselves in the French language and culture. We also realize the importance of mastering a second language in today’s world.
