Learn more about Alliance Française of Westchester's pedagogy

For non-Francophone children and teens, Alliance Française of Westchester is organising French immersion summer classes from July 12th to August 16th. Our pedagogy is based on providing a fully immersive learning environment adapted to children and their developmental needs, so class activities focus on teaching all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Younger children will learn mainly through songs, games, kraft and playful activities, while older children and teens will be given more opportunities to learn through videos and interactive activities, including learning from magazines or newspaper articles, online exercises, etc.

Although grammar and conjugation won't be the primary focus during our summer classes, teachers will make sure children and teens acquire all the necessary basics to be able to speak French as accurately as possible. While an emphasis will be on listening and speaking skills, reading and writing skills will be embedded in activities at different levels, depending on your child's age and fluency level. More advanced level teens will be expected to write in French with a high degree of accuracy.

If your child has never attended classes at AFW, you need to contact us before signing up for summer classes, so we can assess their level. A short, informal interview will be arranged before the first day of class in order for our team to assess your child's level and topics of interest, as well as to gain a better understanding of learning goals which are most important to you.

As non-native French speakers, my husband and I send our children to the AFW so they can immerse themselves in the French language and culture. We also realize the importance of mastering a second language in today’s world. It’s amazing to see how their proficiency in the language has grown and most importantly, their genuine love and interest in French.
My daughter Stella really enjoyed the online class she had over the last few weeks. Aurélie was a wonderful teacher and Stella had a great time beginning to explore the French language. Thanks!

I believe the online platform works really well, and I am excited to see that online courses will be offered in the summer.

In terms of the spring online semester, my daughter Anna has been extremely engaged, the lessons have been impactful, and she has truly been enjoying the interaction.

Thank you for all that you do with the class!
