Does Alliance Française offer lessons for children and teenagers? Bien sûr !

For non-Francophone children and teenagers, Alliance Française of Westchester is organising French immersion lessons throughout the school year, starting from 1h30mn per week, for a total of 30 lessons. When you register to our children or teenagers classes on this page, your registration is for a total of 10 lessons, all taking place during our Winter term. Is your child a native French speaker? In this case, you must check this page.

Our pedagogy is based on providing a fully immersive learning environment adapted to children and their developmental needs, so at this stage lessons focus on teaching all 4 skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Younger children will learn mainly through songs, games and playful lessons, while teenagers will be given more opportunities to learn through videos and interactive activities organized online or offline (offline activities are only available if it is safe to conduct them in person). Although grammar and conjugation won't be the primary focus of lessons, teachers will make sure children and teenagers acquire all the necessary basics to be able to speak French accurately, and students who are 8 years old or more will be given the opportunity to take official exams in French if they wish to do so. While an emphasis will be on listening and speaking skills at first, reading and writing skills will become more important as your child progress, and intermediate and advanced level students will be expected to be able to write in French with a higher degree of accuracy.

If your child has never attended classes at AFW, you need to contact us before signing up for a class, so we can assess their level. If your child is a teenager, they must take our placement test. For younger children, an informal interview will be arranged before the first day of class in order for our team to assess your child's level, as well as to gain a better understanding of learning goals which are most important to you.

When are lessons taking place?

Lessons will start from September 10th onward, and will finish no later than June 27th. Our school year is organized following 3 terms of 10 lessons each.

Autumn term : September 10th - December 18th (no class during Thanksgiving break) - Registration is now closed Winter term : January 4th - March 28th (no class during Presidents week) - Registration is now open Spring term : April 5th - June 27th (no class during Memorial Day weekend)

Children and teenagers are grouped by ages as well as depending on their level.

And what about younger children? Older Teens?

For children who are younger than 6 years old, please check this page. For teens who will turn 18 before January 4th, 2021, please check this page.

Are there extra costs involved when joining this class?

Yes, it is necessary to have a valid membership before the start of the school year. Books are also required for most classes, and the total cost of the books might vary from $50 to $70 per child, depending on their age and level, and depending on whether CD/DVDs are included with learning materials. Normally, each child will need to have only one set of books per school year, although in some rare cases your child might have to purchase a second set of books in January or in April, if they're joining a group which has already started working on a specific book earlier in 2020 and are carrying on studying with the same book.

For online classes, an extra $25 per year may be charged per student to pay for software and e-books licences, but in this case the purchase of paper textbooks may not be necessary. Our team members will do their best to let you know what your options are if in some cases digital versions of textbooks might be available and cheaper than printed versions.

Please note that if you want your child to attend classes during our Winter and Spring term, registration will have to be paid in full one month before the start of the next session. Because of the strict limit on the number of children in all our classes, we won't be able to automatically reserve a seat for your child unless you do so. For children or teenagers who want to carry on learning French all year round, a special Summer package can be purchased separately. Summer lessons will be taking place between July 1st and August 29th, 2021.

What if my child can't join either online or in person lessons on a regular basis?

For families who would rather organise private individual or group lessons in the safety of their own home, or who are looking for a more intensive learning pace, please contact us. We may also be able to offer lessons at a discounted rate, for example if you're looking for French language pods or daily French lessons organized within your own home. This option might be suitable if for example you're expecting to be working from home during your child's lesson. If you child is fully home-schooled and already following a specific curriculum, our teacher will of course work with you in order to respect learning objectives which will be agreed in advance.

As non-native French speakers, my husband and I send our children to the AFW so they can immerse themselves in the French language and culture. We also realize the importance of mastering a second language in today’s world. It’s amazing to see how their proficiency in the language has grown and most importantly, their genuine love and interest in French.

My daughter Stella really enjoyed the online class she had over the last few weeks. Aurélie was a wonderful teacher and Stella had a great time beginning to explore the French language. Thanks!

I believe the online platform works really well, and I am excited to see that online courses will be offered in the summer. In terms of the spring online semester, my daughter Anna has been extremely engaged, the lessons have been impactful, and she has truly been enjoying the interaction. Thank you for all that you do with the class!
